Four actors. Four chairs (and a few other things). No set, not many props, just you and us. A heartbreaking story of love, relationships, and talking to strangers; a murder mystery that may or may not be ever solved; and something else that involves a non-linear narrative, split scenes, switching roles, and talking to a voicemail of your dead wife on stage in a scene that hasn’t happened yet.
Andrew Bovell is one of Australia’s best playwrights (his credits include the screenplay for Strictly Ballroom). Speaking in Tongues was made into a movie called Lantana, which is widely considered one of the best examples of current Australian cinema.
