Director’s Note:
A bit about the show: my only goal for this production was to generate as close to a genuine theater opportunity as I could. After arriving on campus, one of my first realizations about Brown’s theater landscape went something like this, “Holy shit! These people are fucking talented!” and being an individual of very little experience with acting/directing/general-theater-nonsense, it was hard for me to not get too discouraged. And I think that happens to a lot of people. I mean, if you can show me someone involved with theater that didn’t do it in high school I’ll give you ten bucks. That was a lie- anyway, the point is: these people are rare, so far as I can tell, and for an inexperienced student to get into a production of any sort takes a kind of psychological fortitude and ability to accept rejection that, really, no one can expect from that student. In a sense, dat shit is whack, yo! Word.
Such was my primary consideration in producing this magnificent play. Most of the cast have very little experience, and the play itself was written by a student whose work, to my knowledge, has never been produced. And hey, you guessed it, this is my directorial debut as well. All around, this experience has been one of many firsts, significant growth, and intense collaboration. I’m so glad that this happened and I couldn’t be more proud or thankful of my cast and Devin for sticking with it and doing such goddamn great job. Hopefully they’ve all learned something, had a little fun, and will try to brave the tumultuous waters of the Brown University theater department in the future. They all certainly have the ability. Just remember, no matter the obstacle, you keep trying, you’ll get there. In light of this, after the show, the cast and I just might head out to the great western frontier, who knows? Maybe we can score some weed, wanna come with?
