"Production Workshop Minutes"

letter to friends of PW - 31 october 1978

Dear friend of Production Workshop,

As we are now more than a month into this academic year we thought we would drop you a line. To date we have produced two successful weekends of one acts. They were:

Sept. 29, 30 and Oct. 1

  • The World Tipped Over And Laying On Its Side

by Mary Felhaus Webber / directed by John Bauman '81
A four character play that traces the rise to adulthood of a young man; very reminiscent of Thornton Wilder's Our Town.

  • The Empty Cookie Jar

written and directed by Mark Hantoot '79
A two character play that deals with the trials of a married couple, both playwrights, who are fighting to regain the spark in their marriage, in their carriers and in themselves.

Oct. 13, 14 and 15

  • The Boy Who Stole Blue

by Paul Christiansen / directed by Elizabeth DeBruler '79
A highly experimental piece involving mime, caried use of voice, lighting and shape.

  • Si, Si Spinoza

book, music and lyrics by Phil Kaplan '80
directed by Kate Burton '79 and Nancy Carlin '81
A musical comedy play which was done as a radio show. Much in the vein of the National Lampoon Show, it parodied just about everything. The technical director for the first weekend of shows was Paul Klein '80 and for the second, Bret Morgan '80.

We are currently in production of a full-length play — Joe Egg by Peter Nichols, directed by Nancy Carlin '81 and set designed by Bret Morgan '80. Joe Egg is an English play which deals with the problems of a married couple who are bringing up a spastic child. It is a six character play.

We will also be presenting another weekend of one-acts on Dec. 8, 9 and 10.

Interest in Production Workshop has increased significantly this year. The number of students auditioning for productions, working on technical crews and attending the performances has been higher this year than in recent years.

We are very excited with the increase in student particitation as well as with the greater extent and success of experimental theater in our space. We are, and will be, placing more emphasis on the technical and directorial process. We have found, so far this year, that greater attention to the process has upgraded the quality of the product.

Enclosed is an invitation to our next production, Joe Egg.

If you have any questions or comments about Production Workshop, please contact us. Our box number is #69 in the Student Activities Office and our meetings are held every Sunday at 12.30 in the Airport Lounge.

Thank You
